FUN IDEAS TO UTILIZE YOUR FALL HARVEST

Posted on 10/31/22 by Simply Organic Turf Care

Here at Simply Organic, we support all things organic and natural—even with our fall activities. Most people would argue that the most fun thing you can do with fall crops is eat them. From collards to kale and broccoli to beets, the list of vegetables you can grow for fall harvest is long, and the list of cookbooks and recipes websites focused on them even longer. So we’ll discuss consuming them briefly before moving on to other ways to enjoy your fall harvest.

FOOD

Winter squashes include acorn squash, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, and pumpkins. Packed with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins A and C, they can be substituted for potatoes and sweet potatoes in many dishes, and even for rice or noodles in others. Pumpkin in particular has been proven to lower your blood glucose levels, help to moderate spikes in blood pressure, and strengthen your immune system.

DECORATIONS

The many beautiful shades of color that fall showcases make it easy to extend nature’s palette to your home. Here is a partial list of seasonal offerings for crafters.

– wheat stalks

– seedpods

– corn cobs and husks

– nuts

– pomegranates

– chrysanthemums

– Brussels sprouts

What can you make from these plants?  We’re glad you asked!

– wreaths

– centerpieces and basket arrangements

– garlands

– napkin holders

– candlesticks

– gift tags and place cards (from leaf rubbings)

In addition to jack o’ lanterns, hollowed out pumpkins can be used as:

– vases

– candle holders

– bird feeders

– ice buckets to keep drinks cold

– serving bowls for dip, cider, and punch that will add a little extra fall flavor

to their contents

What to do with the contents?  In addition to the many delicious ways to cook pumpkins, you can incorporate them into fragrant candles and soap or use them to make a rejuvenating face mask.

Finally, if you prefer standing out from the natural landscape rather than blending in, most, if not all, of these materials can be dyed to add lively bursts of color.

Simply Organic is dedicated to helping you maintain a beautiful, healthy lawn using natural methods and products.  We hope you’ll be able to use some of these tips to enjoy nature this fall!
